Comparing Distillation And Ion Exchange Water Filters


Water filters are a common plumbing installation that are designed to filter out various contaminants, bacteria, and minerals that may be in your water supply. There are a number of different water filter variants, each of which works in a distinctive way to provide your home with clean, clear water. Two of the most common types of water filters are distillation and ion exchange filters, which have a unique set of advantages and downsides associated with them. Understanding the key differences between distillation and ion exchange water filters can help you choose the one that best suits your home's water filtering needs.

Distillation Filters

Distillation water filters are the most common type of residential water filters. They work by boiling the water that passes through them, and the resulting steam is then condensed into usable water for your home. The main advantage of distillation water filters is that they are able to kill most bacteria and organic compounds during the boiling stage as well as leave behind a great deal of contaminants.

However, there are some notable drawbacks to distillation filters. They require a great deal of energy to constantly heat water, which can drive up your energy bills. Further, they are not one hundred percent effective at removing some chemicals that may be in your water supply, making them fallible in certain situations. Additionally, distillation filters need to be regularly serviced to remove gunk and grime that can be left behind after the boiling process. Distillation filters are very effective at removing bacteria and organic compounds, but should not be used with a water supply that has a high amount of chemical or mineral contamination.

Ion Exchange Filters

Ion exchange water filters work by passing water through a series of resins, which contain ionized minerals that have a reaction with the minerals and compounds within the water to remove them. The main advantage of ion exchange filters is the fact that they are fairly low maintenance: while the resins occasionally need to be recharged, depending on the quality of your water supply, they will naturally regenerate ions over time. They are also extremely effective at removing minerals from your water supply.

However, ion exchange filters can be very ineffective against bacteria and microorganisms, and the resins can actually become breeding grounds for these types of contaminants. If this occurs, the resins have to be replaced, which is expensive. This makes ion exchange filters ideal for use with water supplies that have a high amount of dissolved minerals and chemicals, but not bacteria.
